Office of Protocol to Manage International Flag Collection for Community
Date: 5/6/2010

Adding to its growing roster of protocol services, the Office of Protocol at the International Center of Indianapolis Sponsored by Duke Energy is the newly designated curator for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis international flag collection for the Central Indiana community.

In this new partnership with IUPUI, the Office of Protocol will manage and maintain the IUPUI collection – which includes flags of over 80 countries -- and lend them to different companies and organizations to display at events in Central Indiana.  In addition to the flags themselves, the Office will also provide flag protocol services, such as flag display guidelines, to its clients.

“This program is a great collaboration, combining the resources of IUPUI and the services of the International Center,” said Protocol Officer Peter Kirkwood.  “It will help enhance international events of all kinds in Indiana, and make ICI known locally as the international flag source as well as the knowledge broker of international flag protocol in the community.”

An official partnership ceremony was held during IUPUI’s sixth annual International Festival on April 22 on the IUPUI campus.  During the ceremony, Dr. Susan B. Sutton, Associate Vice President for International Programs at Indiana University and Associate Vice Chancellor of International Affairs at IUPUI, who is also Vice Chair, Governance for the Center, presented Kirkwood with the flag collection.

One of the first shared uses of the collection will take place this summer in Indianapolis when flags of 30 countries will be displayed during the FINA/eSynchro World Junior Synchronised Swimming Championships 2010, hosted by Indianapolis-based USA Synchro in August.
